Born at Alessano, Lecce on March 18, 1935, Antonio Bello remained for everyone, even after his episcopal appointment simply Don Tonino. The son of a Carabinieri marshal and his humble wife, he grew up in poverty in a small village, where the residents lived on Agricultural Economy. He lost his father and brothers at an early age and underwent his elementary studies in his village and later at the Seminaries of Ugento and Molfetta. He frequented the ONARMO, Opera Nazionale Assistenza Religiosa e Morale degli Operai.
Ordained presbyter on December 8, 1957, he was named prefect of the minor seminarians the following year, a position he kept for eighteen years. He furthermore served as director of the 'Vita Nostra' of his diocese.
In the late 1970's he was appointed parish priest of Tricase, an office he kept until his nomination as Bishop of the Diocese of Molfetta, Ruvo, Giovinazzo and Terlizzi in 1982, receiving his episcopal consecration on October 30, from Archbishop Michele Mincuzzi, assisted by Bishops Aldo Garzia and Mario Miglietta. In 1985 he was named president of the Pax Christi. Perhaps his most distinguished case during his episcopate was the peaceful march on Sarajevo on December 7, 1992. He died serenely at the early age of 58, consumed with cancer, on April 20, 1993.
