During the fall of 1867 Abner sold his home in New York and in March 1868 moved his family to Illinois. The family lived there six moths. In the fall of 1868 Abner bought a team of horses, harness and wagon, covered the wagon with a canvas top, loaded the family and started for White Rock, Illinois. At that point they became part of a wagon train that was headed for Kansas and Nebraska. Abner and his family settled near the Little Nemaha River between the Omaha and Oto Indian reservations. Abner homesteaded in Bennett, Nebraska about 1860.
