Bertha Peth German immigrant, arrived in Chicago as a young girl. In 1891 she moved to SMI when hired to be nursemaid for Mrs. Tilton, a member of the Hutzler family. In 1893 she married John Hutzler. They were blessed with a son, Stanley, born in 1899. Sadly, two year old Stanley was badly injured in an accident on the Island and later died in Chicago. His death caused a turmoil in the marriage and Bertha and John soon divorced. She then acquired a house in the village where she lived alone for most of her life. Bertha earned a living gathering wild ginseng roots and selling the roots to a pharmaceutical firm. Many "Islanders" and visitors to South Manitou Island developed a fondness for this unique woman and she was sometimes called "Queen of the Island".
