MRS. BAILEY IS DEAD

MOTHER OF SENATOR SUCCUMBED TO LONG ILLNESS

Was a Woman of Great Energy and Ability Who Had Done Much During Her Long Life.

(Houston Post Special.)
CRYSTAL SPRINGS, Miss., November 18.---Mrs. Harriet L. Bailey, mother of United States Senator J. W. Bailey of Texas, died at her home here this afternoon after a protracted illness. When J. W. Bailey, Sr., her husband, became sick nearly a year ago and was sent to New Orleans for treatment---where he died---Mrs. Bailey was too ill to attend his, and since his death her health has been very poor. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon.
Senator Bailey has spent much time here lately on account of her critical condition, made frequent trips to different parts of the country, however, and last night was in Meridian, the guest of the local lodge of Elks, when he received a telegram announcing that his venerable mother was dying. He caught a train for Jackson and wired to have the Illinois Central held so he could make connections. He was with his mother when she died, as was his sister, Mrs. Childress.
Mrs. Harriet L. Bailey, nee Dees, Widow of J. W, Bailey, and mother of Senator J. W. Bailey of Texas, was born of English-Welsh parentage in Tuscaloosa, Ala., October 22, 1840. She was married to Mr. Bailey May 2, 1858 at Raymond, Miss. Mr. Bailey with his family removed to Vicksburg in 1859 and later to Crystal Springs, where they have since lived and reared their family.
Mrs. Bailey was a most remarkable woman and to her distinguished son owes many of his gifts. Her suberb energy and marked executive ability eminently fitted her for leadership. Few mothers ever gave themselves more devotedly and unselfishly to their families and in return her children loves and admired her. With rare public spirit she gave all that was best in her to whatever was for the interest of her section and community. Years ago she was converted and baptized into the Baptist church. She was an ardent United Daughter of the Confederacy and a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
She leaves, besides Senator Bailey, four daughters, Mrs. W. A. Mason of Clinton, Ky., Mrs. J. R. Rucker of Temple, Texas, Mrs. S. P. Cox of Crystal Springs and Mrs. A. L. Childres of Nashville, Tenn., also her two grandchildren, Mr. R. Cecil Smith of Crystal Springs and Mrs. R. H. Douthat of Yazoo City.
