George Alex Albritton, 62, died October 14, 2001 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. today at Stringer Funeral Home in Crystal Springs. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with burial in Crystal Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Albritton was born on December 26, 1938, and grew up in Farmerville, La., where he graduated from Farmerville High School. He received a BS degree in Agriculture in 1962 from New Mexico University and earned his Master's degree from University of Arkansas in 1965. He was a member of Sigma XI and Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society. He received additional horticultural studies at University of Arkansas.

Mr. Albritton was married to his high school sweetheart, the former Mary Ellen Cole of Farmerville, La., for 42 years. He came to Crystal Springs from Winter Garden Frozen Foods of Bells, Tenn. in 1971 with wife Mary Ellen and their two sons, Steve and Darren. A third son, Doug, was born after they moved to Crystal Springs. He took charge of farm production for Barron & Company, owned by the late J. N. Barron.

Mr. Albritton founded Greenbelt Farms, Inc. in 1972, which he and his family own and operate as a produce brokerage.

Along with Mary Ellen and son Steve, he was a regular exhibitor at produce trade shows and holds many top awards from these annual events including recognition as a trading member of the Produce Reporter Company for many years.

Always civic-minded, Mr. Albritton has been a staunch supporter of the local fire department and the National Guard. His son Steve is a long time volunteer fireman, and his long time Greenbelt Farms employee, Walter J. Rielley, III, presently serves as Lt. Colonel, commanding the 112th Military Police Battalion.

In his free time, Mr. Albritton, an avid gardener, tended the beautiful flower beds at the Visitors Center at Chautauqua Park and his church grounds. Together with Mary Ellen and his family, along with contributions from others, he provided a decorative light to be installed at the entrance to the park as a memorial to his youngest son Doug, who died in 1996.

Mr. Albritton's greatest enjoyment was his family and friends and time spent Rving. He also had a great interest in and was a loyal fan of the NASCAR races and in his motor home along with a caravan of family and friends attended many of these events through the years. In addition to NASCAR, he also co-sponsored a sprint car team. He was interested in all aspects of racing.

Mr. Albritton was a member of the Church of Christ in Crystal Springs. He was a long time director and president of the Northeast Copiah Water Association, the Crystal Springs Chamber of Commerce and Copiah County Farm Bureau where he served as President and director. He was a member of the NRA, a past Jaycee, charter member of the Optimist Club and a member of Hoodtown Hunting Club.

Mr. Albritton was preceded in death by a son, Doug Albritton and a brother, M. L. "Boots" Albritton.

Survivors include wife, Mary Ellen; sons, Steve Albritton and Darren Albritton both of Crystal Springs; daughter-in-law, Stacey; granddaughters, Lauren and Jennifer; sisters, DeVonne Vestal of Monroe, La., Mariete and Roy Nale of Sterlington, La., Mae Carolyn and Jerry Bardin and Laverne and Vernon White both of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; brothers, Morris and Dixie Albritton of Sterlington, La., W. L. "Dub" and Joyce Albritton, Monroe, La., and Gary and Myra Albritton of Farmerville, La.
