Ogdensburg Journal - Tuesday Feb 4, 1908
Richville, Feb. 3. - Mrs. Ann Mellen, relict of the late N. A. Mellen, departed this life at her home in this village last Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock.

Several weeks ago Mrs. Mellen suffered a slight stroke of paralysis and she had been in feeble health since. Last Tuesday she seemed to be feeling much like her former self and intimated a desire to visit the old home on the farm. In company with her son and daughter, who reside with her, she drove to the farm. While there she acted quite natural and was in the best of spirits. Between the hours of 2 and 3 o'clock they started for home, and after going only a short distance from the old place where she had toiled for many years, she suffered another stroke from the effects of which she never rallied passing peacefully away the following Saturday.

Mrs. Mellen's, maiden name was Ann Cleland and she was born at Edwards, March 26, 1842, being the youngest of a family of twelve children, three of whom survive; Mrs. A. P. Sherwin, of Canton; Mrs. Henry Gaddis and Miss Christeen Cleland, both of Edwards. In November, 1863, she was united in marriage to Nathan Arza Mellen, the ceremony taking place at Edwards.

Seven children were born of this union, six of whom are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother, who had tenderly cared for them since the death of the father, which occurred Feb. 27, 1882. They are: Lewis S., Judson A. and Miss Adeline C., of New York city; Frederick G, who resides on the home farm; Miss. Clistie L. and Nathan E., who lived-at home, all of whom were present at the time of her demise. One son. James B., died in New-York, July 17. 1904. Mrs. Mellen was of a rather quiet and retired disposition and was well known for her hospitality and noble deeds. One, of whom it may be truly said, "that to know her was to love her." Her life work is done and well done.

Funeral services will be held at her late home Tuesday, Feb. 4th, at 11 a. m. Interment will be made, in the family plot in the Maple Grove cemetery.
