Born William Russell Enoch, he became interested in acting at an early age. During his Royal Air Force service, he organized entertainment and later afterwards, he attended Oxford University. He later performed in repertory theatre. His acting debut came in the 1952 film "Glory at Sea." He went on to appear in such films as "The Great Escape" and "Superman." His television debut came in the 1954 television movie "Lonesome Like." He later appeared in such television series as "The Adventures of Sir Lancelot," "Nicholas Nickleby," "Doctor Who," "Harriet's Back in Town," "Crown Court," and "Coronation Street."
