Dudley Allen was born a slave in Lexington, Kentucky. He was an accomplished horseman as an owner and trainer of thoroughbreds. Mr. Allen was co-owner (along with Jacobin Stables) of Kingman, a stallion who was ridden by Isaac Murphy, that won the Kentucky Derby in 1891. Mr. Allen was the first African American owner to do so.

Reverend George Downing united Dudley Allen and Margaret Crittenden in marriage and together they lived at 416 Kinkead Street in Lexington, Kentucky.

Mr. Allen served in the Army from 1864-1866 as a Quartermaster Sergeant, 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry Regiment, Company M. He died at his residence.
