Curtis was the husband of Karen Seeley Hurlock and the father of Glenn M. Hurlock and Jeffrey M. Hurlock of Short Beach Connecticut, and the father of Sandra M.Hurlock from his first marriage. He was the son of Carlton W. Hurlock of Arcadia Florida and Hilda E. Wingate of Laurel Delaware, A veteran of over ten years of service in the US Marine Corps re-enlisted on June 2, 1964 in Jacksonville FL. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
During Operation DESOTO near Hill 70, located near the hamlets of Lam Binh and Dong Thuan in Duc Pho District a patrol detonated a SFD (Secondary Firing Device) rigged as a mine believed to have been a 105 mm artillery HE (High Explosive ) round. The explosion killed Sgt Hurlock as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds and wounded another Marine who was evacuated for medical treatment
