at EMH Regional Medical
Center.
A devoted family man and a
dedicated member of the community,
Mr. Kaplan was born
in Lithuania and moved with
his family to Elyria when he
was 5.
He graduated from Elyria
High School in 1942 and
served in the Army with a
tour of duty in the European
Theater during World War II.
Mr. Kaplan married Gilda
Madorsky and later they
became owners of Kaplan's
Furniture.
After retiring, he passed
the family business to his oldest
son, Richard.
He was a member and past
president of Temple B'nai
Abraham. Mr. Kaplan also
was a member of the Elyria
Kiwanis and was a lieutenant
governor of Kiwanis International.
He served as commander of
the Vermilion Power
Squadron and was a Century
Membei' of the Boy Scouts of
America.
He also was a member of
the Jaycees; the Elyria Federation
of Jewish Charities; the
B.C. Holocaust Museum; the
Elyria Memorial Hospital Co.;
and the Lorain Temple.
Mr. Kaplan was a life member
of the Lorain Historical
Society; a member of Friends
of the Elyria Public Library;
the American Legion; and the
VFW.
He also was active with
the ' United Jewish Appeal
and he was instrumental
in creating the WWII Veterans
Memorial at the Lorain
County Courthouse.
Mr. Kaplan's hobbies
included skiing, boating and
traveling around the world.
Survivors include his wife
of 55 years, Gilda (nee
Madorsky) Kaplan; sons
Richard and Steven, both of
Elyria and Jeffrey of Columbus;
daughter Sharon Kaplan
of Dublin, Ohio; eight grandchildren;
his sisters, Miriam
Clebone and Frances Kaplan,
both of Columbus and Edith
Kaufman of Detroit; and
many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Kaplan was preceded in
death by his parents, Sam and
Sonia (Becker) Kaplan.
Services will be 2 p.m.
Thursday at Temple B'nai
Abraham, 530 Gulf Road,
Elyria. Rabbi David Powers
will officiate.
Burial will be in the Agudath
Achim Cemetery in Elyria.
The family will receive visitors
at the Kaplan home after
the funeral 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials may be made to
the Elyria Temple B'nai Abraham,
the Lorain ABI Synagogue,
or to a charity of the
donor's choice
