US Navy Seabee CN Constructionman Roger Edward Huestis was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Navy, CN Huestis served our country until December 14th, 1967 in Quang Tri, South Vietnam. He was 20 years old and was not married. It was reported that Roger died from artillery fire. His body was recovered. Roger was born on January 27th, 1947 in North Merrick, New York. CN Huestis is on panel 31E, line 092 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.

Roger was a special soul. He was a beautiful light spirit. He called my mother Mom and was a part of our familyof 10 - The McLaughlins of Merrick. I remember the day when Roger told me he was going to ask my mother for my hand in marriage. I was 17 he was 18. He said he would be a good provider - and could always make a living with his hands as a carpenter I told him we had to be in love first. He and I laughed as he chased me through the house. He was honest, sincere and very handsome. Irene McLaughlin

I like to hear from someone that was close to Roger. I was with him at A-3 when he got hit. I been looking to tell someone close to him for 30 years. Joe A. LeBoeuf.

At his side as he died: I was standing about ten feet from Huestis and Thompson when an artilery round struck at their feet. Huestis died on the spot and Thompson died later of head wounds. They are listed on the Wall as being killed a day apart. This was at A-3 in the DMZ midway between Gio Linh and Con Thien. It is the northern most point any American Troop have ever been. Many people were killed and wounded up there. I was not. Photo page 249 & 235 of Seabee 5 Cruise book for 67-68. The DVD of this book can be bought at the museum gift shop at Port Huneme. Calif. His last struggle for breath His last spasm before death I can still feel on my hand At times it's more than I can stand So I came to see his name I came so I could claim Peace of mind Before I go blind From the pressure I feel inside From feeling the way he died Roger Huestis 12-15-67.
