Son of the late Graham Francis Thompson and Martha Findlay Thompson, he graduated from North Carolina State University in 1949 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He created and built his company, Thompson Filtration Products.
He was an active member of Old Ford Church of Christ where he was an elder. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Findlay Thompson.
He was survived by his wife of 48 years, Ann Jackson Thompson; his daughter, Frances Elaine Thompson; two sons,
Graham Stephen Thompson and Paul Kevin Thompson; seven grandchildren; and an extended family of relatives and friends. His funeral was held November 30, 2006, at Old Ford Church of Christ with Eddie Bowen and Frank Sheldon officiating. Pallbearers were his grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Frank Sheldon, Ed Bolen and Jerry Boyd, elders of Old Ford Church of Christ.
