Robert S. "Bob" Jones, 81, a longtime Wenatchee area funeral director, died Thursday evening, March 8, 2001, at Cashmere Convalescent Center.

He was born Oct. 21, 1919, at Wilbur to Thomas Fred and Anna Belle (Warehime) Jones.

He attended Wilbur schools and graduated from Wilbur High School in 1937. He worked in highway construction before enlisting in the U.S. Army on April 23, 1942. Bob served in North Africa, Italy and Germany as a crane operator until Nov. 13, 1945.

Following his honorable discharge, Bob returned to Wilbur and on March 31, 1947, married Irene E. Hudkins.

Later in 1947, Bob started his career as a mortician at Jones & Jones Funeral Home in Wenatchee. In 1960, Robert and Willard Walter purchased Jones & Jones and Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery from Irwin H. Jones. In 1962, the Thomas Funeral Home, in Waterville, was purchased and has since served folks in the Big Bend area as the Waterville Funeral Home. He retired in 1986, but served as a consultant in both funeral homes.

Bob enjoyed dancing, fishing, woodworking, gardening and photography. He crafted jewelry, becoming proficient in silver and gold wirework and gemstone faceting. On Dec. 11, 1998, he married Margie Twidwell at Quartzsite, AZ and the couple enjoyed spending their time at North Platte, NB, Hartline and Quartzsite.

He was a 50-year member of William H. Jett Lodge #285, F and AM; York Rite Body; and El Katif Shrine. He was most proud of 34 years of perfect attendance in the Wenatchee Lions Club. He was a member of the American Legion Post 10; Wenatchee Elks #1186, Wenatchee Eagles #204 and Wenatchee First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Margie, at the family home; a daughter and her husband, Carol and Dan Crimmins of Moscow, ID; a son and his wife, James R. and Robin Jones of Coeur d'Alene, ID; and a sister, Ida May Weldert of Spokane.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene in March of 1986 and a sister, Mildred Tilson.

Funeral Services will be conducted at the Wilbur Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m., Tuesday afternoon, March 13, 2001. Pastor Rob Wilson will officiate. Viewing will be available at the church from noon until 1:30 p.m. Concluding services and the interment will follow in the Sherman Cemetery.

If desired, memorials may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children in Bob's name.
