Mrs. C. C. Banks
Mother of Mrs. S. F. Carter Passes Away at Waxahachie

News of the serious illness of Mrs. C. C. Banks of Waxahachie, mother of Mrs. S. F. Carter of this city, was received Friday afternoon and Mr. and Mrs. Carter, accompanied by Miss Annie Vive, left at once for her bedside. They were joined at Waxahachie by
S. F. Carter, Jr., who was en route home from the Virginia Military institute of Lexington, VA.

Death ensued Friday night [June 25, 1909] and the funeral was held Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Banks lived to the ripe age of 79 and was in good health up to a few days of her fatal illness. She had resided in Waxahachie for a quarter of a century, moving there from Galveston in the 1880s.

Her husband, Colonel John Baylor Banks, was one of the pioneers of Texas and a leading and enterprising citizen. Losing many slaves and other property by the Civil War, he was not dismayed, but at the close of hostilities devoted his energies to the upbuilding of his shattered fortunes, and at his death in the early 1870s was among the substantial business men and property owners of Galveston and Texas. He was one of the prime movers in building the first railroad from Houston to Brenham (now the Houston and Texas Central), and was always ready and willing to lend his assistance to the advancement of his city and State. Mr. Carter returned to the city Monday morning and Mrs. Carter, S. F. Carter, Jr., and Miss Annie Vive will return the latter part of the week.
