I. Clarence "Red" Howard, Jr., 82, died of complications from Polio contracted in 1948. He recovered from the original attack and led a full life, graduating from UCLA in 1950. Red devoted several years to fund raising as an employee of the March of Dimes. He became a salesman for a number of diverse companies in the private sector, finally retiring from Allied-Signal in 1990. Red was a Army Air Corps Navigator on B-24 aircraft during WW II. He re-enlisted during the Cold War, achieving the rank of Captain in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He and his wife built the perfect home on a small hill on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where they retired. Red was honored as one of "The Real Men of Dare" by the Outer Banks Hotline organization. He was quoted as saying ..."Strength comes from inner confidence. Force is an outward show of brutality. A Real Man will differentiate between the two in all his relations with women." Red moved to California in his late teens, where he met the love of his life, Katherine Billings. They married young and lived in numerous locations. Red is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Katherine Billings Howard; son Stephen; daughters: Julie Howard Pabst & Beth Howard Skalish; cousin, Stan Bronson; grandsons: Stephen Howard Jr, Matt & Mike Pabst; granddaughters: Shannon Alden, Christine Shurts & Avery Skalish. Red was the great grandfather of Erica, Lindsey & Katherine Howard, Grace Shurts & Daniel & Shaun Alden. A grandson, Hans Pabst preceeded him in passing. Donations in his memory may be made to the March of Dimes or Outer Banks Hotline. Private service will be held by the family to give thanks for his love, pervasive wit, unrelenting sense of humor and, most importantly, his charming presence in their lives, a treasured gift.
