Henry A. Acker, 87, died Friday, May 23, 2008 at his home in New Bloomfield.
He was born May 8, 1921 in Newport, to George and Flossie (Hoffman) Acker.
He was owner of the former H. A. Acker Lumber Company, Newport. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II; member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Newport; Newport Legion #177; Newport VFW #34, where he was a Past Commander; was a former Captain of the Newport Fire Police, and Past President of the Perry County Fire Police Association; served 16 years on the Newport Borough Council and 4 years as President; was a life member of Newport Lodge #381 F&AM; member of Harrisburg Consistory; Life Member of Newport Social Order of Owls; served on the planning and building committee of the Cumberland Perry Vocational School; member and former Director of Newport Senior Citizen Center; member and former Vice President of Newport Cemetery Association.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Dorothy (Flickinger) Acker; daughters, Barbara J. Alleman and husband, Russell of Newport, Nancy A. Hull and husband, George of Harrisburg, and Patricia K. Beaver and husband, Rich of Newport; grandchildren, Greg Weibley, David Alleman, Marcia Washinger, Julie Lorenz, Michael Beaver, and Scott Beaver; great-grandchildren, Drew Alleman, Alana Alleman, Brandon Washinger, and Jenna Washinger. He was preceded in death by a sister, Druscilla Burd.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday at 11 a.m., in the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport, with Rev. Jay B. Eickhoff officiating. Burial in the Newport Cemetery, with full military honors by the New Bloomfield VFW #7463 and Newport American Legion #177. Viewing will be Tuesday from 10 a.m., until service time at the funeral home.
