Samuel G. Backus, a highly respected citizen, passed away at his home near Flackville, Monday, March 19, 1917. He was around the house as usual until about four o'clock, when he became suddenly ill and died at eight o'clock. He had been suffering several years with heart trouble and hardening of the arteries.
Mr. Backus was born near Heuvelton June 27, 1842, the eldest son of John and Jane Backus. One sister died in infancy and one brother at the age of 22. He was a veteran of the Civil War, a member of Co G, 142nd N.Y. Vols, and was honorably discharged on account of sickness. He was married March 29, 1874, to Elvira Farrar, who survives him with one son, Allen and two daughters, Mrs. Leslie Smithers, and Mrs. James Thompson; besides four sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Flight, Mrs. Olive Goodison, Mrs. Mary Smithers, Mrs. George Graham, and three brothers, Andrew, Reese, and Byran Backus.
Mr. Backus was converted when a young man, uniting with the M. E. Church of Heuvelton, and eight years ago moved from Heuvelton, uniting with the Flackville M.E. Church. He will be missed in the large community in which he lived and the sympathy of his many friends go out to the bereaved widow and family.
The funeral was held Thursday from the home at 11 o'clock, Rev. W. O. Hull officiating. Burial in Huevelton beside his son who died in infancy.
