Alice J. Cannon

Alice J. Cannon of Virginia Beach, VA passed from this world May 15, 2008, survived by her loving children and grandchildren.

She was born in Easton, MD, November 3, 1931. From the age of 11, she lived with her parents in Bridgeville, DE. It was there that she met her future husband and soul mate, Jim. Alice was the captain of the cheerleading squad at Bridgeville High School and Jim was the quarterback. She went on to be the class valedictorian. Alice graduated from the University of Delaware with honors and distinction with a B.S. in Business. She dated Jim through high school and college and they married at the Naval Academy chapel in 1956. She was most proud to be Mrs. James R. Cannon, a Navy wife. She cared for her three children through several moves and deployments with grace and strength. As her children grew older, she worked at the naval architectural firm of George G. Sharpe, first as her husband's administrative assistant and later as office manager. She retired to enjoy time with her eight grandchildren. She volunteered on the alter guild and in the office at St. Aidan's Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. She cooked many meals and welcomed her children's families on visits to the beach. She cared for her grandchildren on the family's annual ski trips while her children skied. In 2003, Alice and Jim moved to Westminster Canterbury. Alice was well known there as the sweet lady who always had a smile on her face. Alice was always there for her three children and their spouses. She was a rock of strength for her family and will be greatly missed.

Alice is survived by her children, Jim Cannon Jr., Susan Richter, Debbie Mawyer; and her 8 grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Tuesday at 2 pm at Westminster Canterbury on Shore Drive in Virginia Beach. The family will received friends at the LASKIN ROAD CHAPEL OF H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Monday, May 27, from 7-8 pm. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC.
