The Oregon Military Police, not to be confused
with the present State Police authorized in 1931, was called into being early in the spring of 1918 because of certain emergencies arising as a result of WWI then in progress. According to Governor James Withycombe, the Organization under discussion was created at the suggestion of the State Council of Defense. Its purpose being to guard shipyards, grain elevators, warehouses, docks, canneries, food depots, etc. THE OREGON POLICE OF WWI, BY J.P. Santee. The police
private's pay of $90 per month was three times the pay of a soldier's. The organization came to an end on March 30, 1919.
