Son of James Henry Downing and the late Wilma Overby Dowing, he graduated from Natchez High School, Hinds Junior College and attended Mississippi State University. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the U.S. Navy. At the time of his death, he was a senior software engineer for Lockheed Martin in California. In addition to his father, he was survived by a brother, J. Neil Downing; and an extended family. His funeral was held May 1, 2008, with The Rev. Marc Mihail officiating.
