Services Friday For Guy Bruce

Funeral services for Guy Bruce, 89, of Nelson will be held Friday, August 23, 10:30 a.m. at the Nelson Community United Church of Christ. Rev. Royce Bucchtel will officiate with burial in the Nelson Cemetery. Mr. Bruce, a retired carpenter, passed away Tuesday, August 20, at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings.

Survivors include his wife Nina Mae; a brother Paul and his wife Lila Mae Bruce of Santa Monica, California; and a sister, Mrs. Edna Kirkpatrick of Omaha. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Guy Basil Bruce, son of John and Hattie Leedy Bruce was born September 25, 1901, at Bastian, Virginia. He died August 20, 1991, after a lingering illness, at the Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings, Nebraska, at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 25 days.

Guy was a little over one year old when his parents moved to Nebraska from the state of Virginia in the fall of 1902, to a farm near Nora, Nebraska. A few years later they moved to a farm near Nelson, Nebraska.

Guy attended schools in the Nora and Nelson areas, graduating from Garfield Rural School in 1917. Guy worked for several years in the Havelock Railway repair yard, then returned to Nelson to farm with his father. In 1928, he was united in marriage to Nina Mae Porter. Guy continued to farm until 1936 when he and his wife moved to Nelson.

He was a carpenter for over 40 years in the Nelson area and was reluctant to retire at the age of 85 years.

Guy was a member of the Presbyterian Church for over 70 years, serving as custodian for many years. He also served as Elder and helping wherever needed. Bruce was a member of the Nelson Masonic Lodge #77, A.F. and A.M. He served as Worshipful Master and continued as Treasurer for many years. He was also a member of the Nelson Chapter #27 Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Patron for many years. He was active as a member of the Cemetery Board and Fire Department.

Guy was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Rex and Chester.

Guy was a devoted husband and friend. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Nina Mae; brother, Paul and wife Lila Bruce of Santa Monica, California; sister, Edna Kirkpatrick of Omaha, Nebraska; sisters-in-law Marie Troudt, Leona Porter and Floy Porter all of Nelson. Also a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 23, 1991, at 10:30 a.m. from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, Nebraska, with the Rev. Royce Buchtel officiating. Organist Robert C. Bruce played an organ solo of "In The Garden" and was accompanist for congregational singing of "How Great Thou Art." Pallbearers were Ronald Porter, Darrell Jensen, Ray Shaw, Verle McKevitt, Don Follmer and John Bruce. Honorary pallbearers were Fritz Wehrman, Gene Jensen, Clyde Reeve, Bill Wehrman, Earl Petz and Russell Reeve. Masonic Rites were given by Nelson Lodge No. 77, A.M. and F.M. Burial was in the Nelson Cemetery near Nelson, Nebraska. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson was in charge of the arrangements.

Relatives attending services for Guy Bruce were from Omaha, Lincoln, Edgar, California, Hastings, Lewiston, Superior, Seward and Davenport.
