Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a lawyer of the Sculteis bank of Rome, Annibale Capalti received his education at Seminary of Volterra and later at the Roman Seminary, from where he obtained his doctorates in philosophy and theology. Administrator of the Società degli Asili d'Infanzia of Rome, he started lecturing canonical texts at La Sapienza University of Rome in 1839, a position which he held until 1847. Appointed canon of the chapter of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, he also served as secretary of the Sacred Congregation of Studies from November 1845 until March 1852. Named canon of the chapter of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica, he went on to serve as prefect of studies of the Roman Seminary from 1848 till 1860, being in the meantime appointed substitute of the Minister of Public Instruction in 1848. Consultor of the Sacred Congregation of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs and of the Sacred Congregation of the Index, member of the Council of State from 1851 until 1860, secretary of the Sacred Congregation of Rites between November 14, 1854 and 1861, and secretary of the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide from March 30, 1861 till 1868, Capalti was created cardinal deacon by Pope Pius IX in the consistory of March 13, 1868, with the deaconry of Santa Maria in Aquiro. Named prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Studies on January 3, 1870, he died seven years later while still in office.
