Bio:
Jeremy was born on April 15, 1811 in Stoughton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He was the son of Jeremy and Susan (Snow) Hixson. His family removed to Erie County, Pennsylvania sometime before 1820, before removing to Michigan City, La Porte County, Indiana in 1834, and then settling in Winfield Township, Lake County, Indiana in 1838.
Jeremy married Almira Pratt on March 18, 1839, in Berrien County, Michigan, (which is just over the Indiana state line at La Porte County). Children from the union include: Vastilla, George, Ella, Isador (?), and Mary. The family resided in Michigan until 1843 before removing to Chicago for nine years. The family returned to Porter County in 1852.
While in Chicago, Jeremy was a sailor on the great lakes. He was a captain and owned his own vessel. He brought the first shipment of wheat to Michigan City from Buffalo, New York. He endured several shipwrecks, but gave up maritime life after a particularly bad shipwreck that destroyed his boat. He returned to Indiana and where for a time he owned a saw mill, was a merchant, and a farmer.
He enlisted in the Civil War where he was the Acting Master for all the Massachusetts coast-wise shipping. He was wounded in April 1863 and died shortly thereafter in Valparaiso. (It has been confirmed from military records that Jeremy was an Acting Master, but service is unknown. One record reports he was dismissed on November 18, 1861. Another record reports he was paid $1,200 as Acting Master. The Valparaiso Vidette Messenger article from 1962 reports the article is based on fact and legend.)
Obituary from Chicago Tribune:
