Carrie Burns Brown, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and internationally known Artist passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024 at the age of 92.

She was born in Twiggs County, Georgia in 1932 to Ludie Burns and grew up in Macon, Georgia. Her gift for Art was discovered at a very young age, completing her first painting at the age of six. During her early years of school, the passion for Art grew and became her love for the next 86 years. Carrie attended Mercer University where she studied Art and all that followed led to an incredible life making her lasting impression in the Art world.

After marrying Bill in 1953, the couple called several cities "home" moving from Macon to Atlanta, GA to St. Louis, MO before landing in Greenville, SC in 1963.

As her Art talents had already been in full swing, Greenville became the home base to paint and teach locally as well as throughout the US and beyond. Carrie continued to paint for the next 62 years and became well known around the globe touching the lives of countless others.

In 2014, Carrie and several of her artist friends felt the need to bring a Visual Arts Center to Greenville. They wanted the community to have a place for Artists to teach, paint and promote the visual arts in a safe, inviting environment, thus the Greenville Center for Creative Arts was founded. Now celebrating its' 10th year, this important part of Carrie's Art legacy and its' accomplishments was a source of great pride.

Locally, Carrie taught at the Greenville County Museum School of Art, Springmaid, Watercolor Media Workshops, Tempo Gallery, Greenville Center for Creative Arts (GCCA), and many other locations around the Upstate.

Her innovative ways and colorful works have prompted inclusion of her paintings in many publications throughout the country. Carrie was honored with multiple awards throughout her career and many of her paintings are housed in corporate and private collections both nationally and internationally.

In addition to a productive career as an Artist and Art Educator, Carrie was appointed by the Governor of SC to serve on the SC Arts Commission Board for six years and was a life member of the South Carolina and Georgia Watercolor Society.

Carrie dedicated her life to living each day to the fullest. She more than accomplished this and we all know and laugh as we share the knowledge of "she did it her way"!

Carrie's memory will be cherished and kept alive by her sons, Phillip Brown (Kim) and Bryant Brown(Gayle); grandchildren, Jenna Brown, Taylor Brown, Pruitt Brown, and Hunter Brown; step-grandchildren, Megan Carson (Reece), Paige DeWitt (Ben); and step-great grands, Amelia Carson and Elliott Carson.

Carrie was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Carlton Brown of Greenville, SC; one brother, Ed Burns; and three sisters, Hedie Belle, Martha, and Cleo all of Macon, GA.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Carrie's life will be held on May 10, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at The Greenville Center for Creative Arts. The family will receive friends following the service in the main Art Gallery.

In lieu of flowers and at Carrie's request, memorials may be made to the The Greenville Center for Creative Arts (GCCA), 101 Abney Street, Greenville, SC 29611 or by visiting https://artcentergreenville.org/support/.
