Roman Catholic Cardinal. The nephew of Cardinal Giuseppe D'Annibale, Antrodoco born Federico Tedeschini entered seminary in Rieti, later moving to the Pontifical Roman Seminary in Rome. Ordained priest in July 1896, he was appointed to the teaching staff of the named seminary of Rieti, being soon named canon theologian of the local cathedral chapter. Raised to the rank of privy chamberlain of His Holiness on November 6, 1903, he was named chancellor of the Secretariat of Briefs in the Roman Curia on October 20, 1908. Appointed substitute of the Secretary of State of the Vatican City and secretary of the Ciphering on September 24, 1914, he was named apostolic nuncio in Spain on March 31, 1921, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Lepanto from Pope Benedict XV on the following May 5. Founding the Spanish Catholic Action, with Spain on the brink of civil war, Pope Pius XI elevated him to the Sacred College of Cardinals on March 13, 1933, retaining his name however 'in pectore', being ultimately published in the consistory of December 16, 1935, with Tedeschini receiving the title of Santa Maria della Vittoria. Named Papal Datary on February 25, 1938, Pope Pius XII appointed him his successor as archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica on March 14, 1939. Opting for the order of cardinal bishops and the suburbicarian see of Frascati on April 28, 1951. In 1950, gratefully acknowledging his participation in the preparation of the dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Pius XII highlighted his role in the apostolic constitution 'Munificentissimus Deus'. Sharing a special affection for the Virgin Mary, Pope Pius XII asked the Cardinal to be his representative at the centennial celebrations in Lourdes and legate to the fiftieth anniversary from the incoronation of the image of the Immaculate Conception at the collegiate parish church of Cospicua, Malta, in June 1955. He furthermore acted as Papal legate to the celebrations in honour of Our Lady at Fátima, Portugal, on September 24, 1951, to the 35th International Eucharistic Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on May 10, 1952 and to the National Eucharistic-Marian Congress held in Lima, Perú, on November 8, 1954. Tedeschini died of intestinal cancer, shortly after undergoing surgery, at the Palace of the Datary in Rome, and was laid to rest in the grottoes of St. Peter's Patriarchal Basilica.
