Father of three American Civil War Generals and one writer. Jeptha Dudley Garrard was the son of Gen. James and Nancy Lewis Garrard. He was grandson of Governor James Garrard, the second governor of Kentucky and Elizabeth Mountjoy Garrard. He was brother to Thomas, Lewis, James, Stephen Lewis Garrard, Massena, William, Elizabeth Lewis Garrard Bedford, Edward Garrard, Sarah Lewis Garrard Russell, Charles Todd Garrard, Ann Maria Garrard Bedford, Margaret Talbot Garrard Bedford, and Mary Garrard. He completed his education at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY and went to Cincinnati, OH to practice law. There he married Sarah Bella Ludlow in 1824. She was the daughter of Israel Ludlow, one of the early founders and proprietors of Cincinnati, OH and Ms. Charlotte Chambers (daughter of Gen. James Chambers who was Col. of the First Pennsylvania Regiment during the American Revolutionary War). Jeptha D. and Sarah Bella Ludlow were parents of Gen. Israel Garrard, Gen. Kenner Garrard, Dr. Lewis Hector (noted author of "Waytoyah and the Taos Trail" and "Chambersburg in the Colony and Revolution"), and Gen. Jeptha Garrard. Jeptha D. Garrard was originally interred at First Presbyterian Vault on 12TH Street in Cincinnati, OH. On August 1, 1859 was reentered in the family plot at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, OH. He lies there in an unmarked grave.
