John enlisted in Co. E, 14th Ohio Infantry
at Defiance, Ohio in August of 1861. After being mustered into the unit, he went to Camp Oliver at Toledo, Ohio, where the regiment was organized. He took part with his regiment in the battles of Wild Cat Mountain KY, Mill Springs KY, Shiloh Tenn. (also known as Pittsburg Landing), Perrysville KY (also known as Chaplin Hills), Rolling Fork KY, Hoover's Gap Tenn (principal battle of the Tullahoma Campaign), and Chickamauga GA. He received serious wounds at the Battle of Chickamauga and was taken prisoner by the Confederates, first being held at Libby and Scott's prisons at Richmond (also receiving treatment for his wounds at a hospital), and was then transferred to a prison at Danville, Virginia. In spring of 1864 he was sent to Andersonville prison, where he was held for four and one half months. He was next held at prisons at Charleston SC and Florence SC; he briefly escaped from the prison at Florence. He was paroled in a prisoner exchange on Feb. 24, 1865 and was discharged from duty at Columbus Ohio on March 8, 1865. He returned to his family in Williams Co. Ohio for a few years, after which he moved to Orland in Steuben Co. Indiana, where he worked as a farm laborer. He married Teressa Sherman in Branch Co. Michigan on Jan. 13, 1867. The family moved to Bethel twp. of Branch Co. Michigan in 1875 where he was a prosperous farmer and stock raiser. John and his family later lived in Kinderhook twp. of Branch Co. Michigan.
