Norman L. Mauroner, MD, 93, of Shreveport, LA, died at home on Friday, November 27, 2015. Dr. Mauroner was born on July 5, 1922 in Hammond, LA, one of the eleven children of Vessie and Louis Mauroner.
Norman married Katherine Stanton in Athens, GA in 1948 and was a devoted father to his daughter Susan Kolniak and sons, Lee, David and Richard.
Dr. Mauroner served in the United States Navy in the Active Branch from 1942 to 1945, and in the Reserve Branch as a medical officer attached to the local Marine Reserve Unit for over 35 years.
In 1953 Norman graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine New Orleans, LA with a Doctor of Medicine Degree. He was in family practice and taught family practice before entering residency training in psychiatry. Dr. Mauroner was Board Certified in Psychiatry, Administrative Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry. He was employed as a physician at the VA Medical Hospital for five years and then as Director of the Louisiana Medical Health Center for eighteen years. He was also a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Louisiana State School of Medicine in Shreveport, LA, a consultant to the Louisiana State and Federal Courts and for a six year period, a Deputy Coroner.
Dr. Mauroner was a member of The American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, past president and fellow of the American Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, and a member of the Louisiana Psychiatric Association, the Louisiana State Medical Society and the Shreveport Medical Society.
Norman was a member of the Broadmoor United Methodist Church. He was an active leader in the Boy Scouts and served at several Jamborees: in honor of his long service, Norman was presented with the Silver Beaver Award and the Kinsey Scout Reservation clinic bears his name. Dr. Mauroner served for ten years as the team physician for Fair Park High School. He was a member of the Shriners, the Shreveport Exchange Club and the American Legion. In retirement, he served as a Red Cross Volunteer at the Barksdale Air Force Base pharmacy.
Dr. Mauroner is survived by his wife Katherine; sons, Lee, David and Richard; daughter, Susan Kolniak; grandchildren, Katherine Muzzo, David Allain, Norman Mauroner, Lynne Mauroner, Alexander Mauroner, and Clifford Mauroner; great-grandchildren, Noemi Mauroner, Landon Burrows, and Allaina Muzzo; siblings Nan Westbrook and Donnie Mauroner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, eight of his siblings and his grandson Richard Mauroner, Jr.
Services for Dr. Mauroner will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall St. in Shreveport. Burial will follow at Forest Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dr. Mauroner's memory to the Norwela Council of the Boy Scouts of America or charity of choice. The family especially wishes to thank Willis-Knighton Hospital and Divine Health Care for the service provided Norman through his illness.
