The Rev. James B. Ansley, 94, a retired chaplain of Harris Hospital, died Sunday, May 27, 2007.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home. The Rev. Ansley will lie in state from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Private interment: Prairie Point Cemetery in Navarro County.
The Rev. Ansley was born Aug. 8, 1912, in Optimo, Okla. A graduate of Optimo High School, he earned an undergraduate degree from Friends University in Wichita, Kan., and a master's degree from the Perkins School of Theology at SMU. Texas Wesleyan College awarded the Rev. Ansley an honorary doctorate in 1967.
The Rev. Ansley served as a minister in the Bazette area, Corsicana District of the Methodist Church and as a chaplain in the U.S. Army in the European and North Africa campaigns. He was a minister at First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth before he began a long career as chaplain at Harris Hospital. There he was head chaplain for 25 years and named a National Chaplain of the Year in 1974. He loved "being there" for people and they loved him.
The Rev. Ansley retired in 1982. He and his beloved wife, Lorraine, moved to Cedar Creek, where he enjoyed fishing and carpentry. He could fix or repair nearly anything. He used his skills to finish out the interior of their lake house. He loved working on cars and making landscape projects with cement. When working with wood, if one nail was good, two were even better.
The Rev. Ansley was the last surviving member of a family of seven brothers and sisters.
Survivors: His wife of 64 years, Lorraine; children, Camille Ansley Thomason and her husband, John, and Frank Ansley and his wife, Suzanne; and other family members and friends whose lives he influenced and helped.
