Glaucius, the son of Lewis and Mary, nee Judd, Royce, was born about 1839. He enlisted in the McClellan Dragoons in Chicago, Ill., in or after October 1861. The Dragoons were assigned to the 12th Illinois Cavalry as Companies "H" and "I," in February 1862, but served detached until February 1863. The Dragoons participated in the Defenses of Washington, D.C., until March 1862 when they moved to the Peninsula of Virginia. The Dragoons took part in the Peninsula Campaign, including the Siege of Yorktown, Va., April 5-May 4; near Williamsburg, Va., May 4; and the Battle of Williamsburg May 5, in which Glaucius lost his life.
