Son of William A. Scott and Edith Hall and my maternal great-grandfather. Russell McLain Scott married his first wife, Rosanna Burkey, in Hardin Co. Ohio on May 22, 1873. The widower Russell Scott married the widow Martha Jane (Gettys) Troyer on Aug. 28, 1883 in Putnam Co. Ohio. A veteran of service during the Civil War, Russell Scott enlisted in Hardin Co. Ohio on Mar. 27, 1865 and was mustered into Co. E., 198th O.V.I. at Camp Chase (Columbus Ohio) on Apr. 21, 1865. Due to the collapse and surrender of the Confederacy, the 198th was mustered out on May 8, 1865, never having left the state. Russell Scott died of stomach cancer in Tiffin Township of Defiance Co. Ohio. Contrary to the following obituary and his Ohio death certificate, he was not born at Bellefontaine, Ohio.

Obituary, 'Bryan Democrat' (Williams Co. Ohio), May 5, 1922
'R.M. Scott was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, July 22, 1847, where he grew to manhood (this is incorrect; he was not born in Harding Co., but in Hardin Co.). He was married to Rosanna Berkey. Two daughters and one son came to bless this home. He was a Civil war veteran, enlisting in Co. E., 198th Reg. O.V.I. March 17, 1865 and was honorably discharged May 8, 1865. In 1880 Mrs. Scott was called to that greater reward, leaving a little baby not a year old to be cared for by loving friends. August 2, 1883, he was married to Martha ---------; to this union was born two daughters. In 1908 they moved to Pulaski Ohio, where they have since resided. Mr. Scott was a good man and had many friends. He was not a member of any church, but often expressed himself as being ready to meet his God. He has been in declining health for several months and a few weeks ago he was brought to the home of his daughter, Mrs. S. Mauk, south of Evansport, where he has had the best of care and ll that loving hands could do was done for him. He was a very patient sufferer and it was a pleasure for those arounf him to administer to his wants. He only bid the time when he was to answer the final call, ot to battle, but to that heavenly home where peace and happiness reigns forever. He departed this life early Monday morning, April 17, 1922, at the age of 74 years, eight months and 25 days. He leaves to mourn their loss, a companion, Mrs. Martha Scott; one son, Mr. Jack Scott of Moline, ILL.; four daughters, Ms. Etta Johnson, Drumright, Okla.; Mrs. Minnie Price, Bryan, Ohio; Mrs. Mary Schuettee, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Mrs. Anna Mauk, Evansport, Ohio; three stepchildren, Mr. Lawrence Troyer, Continental, Ohio; Mrs. Alice Sample Grand Rapids, Mich.; Mrs. Celia Baughman, Andover, Ohio; four sons-in-law; ninteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. E.M. Johnson, Drumright, Okla.; one brother, Lafeyette Scott, Bryan, Ohio.
We think of you in silence,
No eyes can see us weep.
Many silent tears are shed,
When others are asleep.
Happy were we together,
Lonely are our hearts today;
For the one we loved so dearly,
Has forever passed away.
The funeral services were held in the Pulaski M.E. church, Wednesday afternoon, April 19, 1922, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Shepard. The remains were laid to rest in the Shiffler cemetery.'
