I do understand that various researchers are passionate about the spelling of the last name in this case. However, I find evidence on both sides and I am trying to please all parties I have heard from over the years – and there have been a few.

Webber – 1. The cemetery that this couple is buried in consists of land donated by John and is spelled Webber. 2. Illinois land records for John spell it Webber. 3. A Naturalization record (not 100% sure is this John though) is spelled Webber. 4. Illinois State census 1865 is spelled Webber. 4. Newspaper articles about the Methodist Church spell it Webber. 5. 1850 Agriculture schedule spells it Webber. 6. 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1870 Census is Webber. 7. History of Southern Illinois spells it Webber. 8. Herschel E. Dunham – a major long-time Weber/Webber researcher - spelled John and Elizabeth as Webber.

Weber – 1. 1860 Agriculture Schedule spells it Weber. 2. A Methodist Church record from Philadelphia, PA (not 100% sure is our John) spells it Weber. 3. Earlier photos of the tombstones show Weber. 4. 1860 Census is spelled Weber.

Even the children's (see below) tombstones have spellings of Weber and Webber.
