William B. Ellis

Wm. B. Ellis was a native of the state of New York. When Twenty-six years of age, he came to this county and entered a quarter section of land in Elk township, and the same year returned to New York state. Three years later he again came to this county and has ever since then resided here. In 1857 he was married to Miss Cordelia Walton, who died August 15, 1865. To them were born four children, Isabel, Cora, Mary and Rosetta, two of whom only survive him, Mrs. Isabel Liax, of Noble county, Minnesota, and Mrs. E. W. Cook, of Coffins Grove township, this county. He was again married to Mrs. Julia Evans, whose death occurred July 25, 1875. His children by his second marriage, now living are Peter Ellis of Idaho and Kittie M. and Ella E. Ellis, both of whom resided with their father from infancy until his decease.

For several months past Mr. Ellis was confined to his bed by sickness, and, though for several weeks it was feared that he would not recover, yet hope was entertained that with the coming of spring his health would be restored. He was treated during his entire illness by able and skilled physicians, and everything done for him that kind and living children could do for his comfort and restore him to heath, but on Wednesday the 22nd inst.,

"Like a shadow thrown
Softy and sweetly from a passing cloud,
Death fell upon him."

Though one of the early settlers of this county, and a continuous resident of it close onto half a century, he was not as well known outside of the immediate vicinity of his home as many who have resided here but a few years. He was truly a home man, was honest and industrious and labored early and late to better his own condition, for the welfare of his family. By his decease his children have been deprived of a kind father, and the county one of its best citizens.

The funeral services were held last Friday at the Universalist church in Greeley.
