Chairman of the Lenoir County Board of Education (1947-1962)

Born on September 11, 1890 in Vance Township and a son of the late Robert A. and
Emma Parrott Wooten, he was educated in the local schools and at Trinity College (now
Duke University).He was married to the former Sally Lou Macon on October 2, 1922.
During his youth the consolidation movement began in Lenoir County and he
became one of its prime advocates and life-long booster of education. He provided
college study for a large family of six and through his leadership was instrumental in
helping to bring Lenoir Community College to Lenoir County.
Prior to his election to the county school board, Mr. Wooten was a member of the
local school board at Wheat Swamp School. Mr. Wooten served as chairman of the
County Board of Education from 1947 through 1962 and was a member of that group for
20 years. During his tenure the consolidation of Lenoir County schools was completed.
This county was the first to consolidate all its white schools in the 1920's and after World
War II the further consolidation to take care of the blacks was completed. He was
recognized for his services in many ways. The North Lenoir High School Gym bears his
name. In 1974 the Wheat Swamp Ruritan Club named him the outstanding citizen of the
year. He served as a member of the Richard Caswell Memorial Commission.
After his wife, Sallie Lou Macon of Louisburg, died on October 23, 1969, Mr. Wooten
maintained a keen interest in county and area affairs throughout his life and was active
until he underwent surgery a few days before his death on April 3 1975. He was a faithful
supporter of his church, Airy Grove Christian Church and worthwhile causes but his
keenest interest was in education and the community college system.
