US Congressman, Journalist. After serving in World War II as an Army staff member of the Stars and Stripes newspaper, he returned to California and was city editor of the San Diego Journal from 1952 to 1961. In 1963, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-eighth Congress and to the eight succeeding Congresses, serving until 1981. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he became a journalist for the San Diego Tribune, was news director for XETV Channel 6, television station and was a professor emeritus, at San Diego State University. He died of a heart attack.
