Mary was the wife of James McCracken, a Revolutionary War soldier who had migrated into South Carolina from his birth place of Scotland. James was born 14 Dec 1754 and died 8 Aug 1824 in Madison Co., Alabama. His burial place is believed to be, at this time, on Sand Mountain in Madison Co., Alabama. This was the place of burial that his grandson, Rufus McCracken, named in the McCracken family records that he left. Rufus also cited Mary Smith McCracken's place of birth as Ireland.
James and Mary Smith McCracken were married 22 Jan 1779 and were the parents of twelve children: John, Jane, Hannah, Nancy, Mary Elizabeth, Lettice, William, James, Jr., Robert Smith, Jeremiah, Nimrod and Anson McCracken.
The older McCracken children were born in South Carolina and the younger ones in what is now Madison Co., Alabama. At the time, that area was known as the Alabama/Mississippi Territories.
