Dr. W. Tom Arnold, III, M.D. passed away into the arms of his Lord and Savior on March 29, 2016 with his family at his bedside.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and spent a lifetime in service to his fellow man.

Dr. Arnold was born in Hemphill, Texas on March 19, 1921 to Dr. William T. Arnold, Jr and Sarah Pearl Fuller Arnold

He grew up with his sister, Doris and his three brothers, Woodrow, Hiram and Hugh.

He graduated from Hemphill High School with Honors in 1938 and completed his pre-medical studies at the University of Texas in 1941. Dr. Arnold received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) in 1944. Following medical school, Dr. Arnold completed his internship in internal medicine at Hermann Hospital, a one-year residency in internal medicine at Southern Pacific Hospital in Houston, followed by internal medicine and tropical diseases residency at Walter Reed Hospital. He then completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at Lahey Clinic in Boston Massachusetts. Dr. Arnold was commissioned in the United States Army, Medical Corps upon his graduation from UTMB Galveston.

While in medical school, he met the love of his life, Kathleen "Kaye" Taylor, a nursing student at UTMB's nursing school. On April 7, 1944, they became Dr. and Mrs. W. Tom Arnold and were married for 62 years until her death in 2006.

Dr. and Mrs. Arnold eventually settled in Houston, Texas where he practiced internal medicine and gastroenterology beginning in 1950. On February 1, 1957, Dr. Arnold and eight other doctors founded the Diagnostic Clinic of Houston; where he practiced gastroenterology until his retirement in 1998.

On June 1, 1966, he and his colleagues opened Diagnostic Center Hospital. During his 41 years of practicing medicine, Dr. Arnold was an innovator in the private practice of medicine, a leader in community, state and national affairs, as well as in his field in medicine. Additionally, he was an associate professor of internal medicine at University of Texas Houston Medical School and Baylor College of Medicine. He received the Ashbel Smith Honor Award from the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston and numerous other awards and honors.

Dr. Arnold was heavily involved in Houston area philanthropy. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Houston for over 50 years and was the last surviving original founders of the Rotary Lombardi Award. He was a 50-year member of the Executives Association of Houston. He was instrumental in founding Houston International Hospital.

Dr. Arnold is preceded in death by parents Dr. William Thomas Arnold, Jr. and Sarah Pearl Arnold and his sister, Doris and his three brothers, Woodrow, Hiram and Hugh.

Dr. Arnold is survived by his daughter, Jan A. Parks, his son, Tom Arnold IV, his grandchildren, Christopher Parks, Kathleen and her husband Graham Thompson, Sarah and her husband Josh Munks and his great-grandchild, Bennett Kathleen Munks.

A memorial for the celebration of his life will be at First Presbyterian Church on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 1pm, with a reception following.
