Labor Leader. Born in in Lanarkshire, Scotland, he emigrated to America in 1902, settled in the western Pennsylvania mining district and became a coal miner. He joined the United Mine Workers of America, was elected local president in 1904 and rose to presidency of the Mine Workers Union in 1920. He became a CIO vice president in 1936 and headed the steel workers' organizing campaign in 1940. Elected President of United Steel Workers of America in 1942, he take unionism out of the doldrums' through the creation of industrial unions, into a position of fair equal labor which influenced big business and national politics. He retained his presidency of the Steel Workers of America until his death in San Francisco.
