Eugene was the son of "Prof" William Franklin Maynor and Arta Kathryn Reneau. He was the husband of Adelaide Dortha Maynor. After graduating from Blount County High School, where he was captain of the 1913 state championship football team, Eugene studied at the University of Alabama before going into the Army in WWI. Coming out of service as a captain of field artillery, he entered Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), choosing it because of its engineering and agricultural courses, and later studied at the Missouri School of Mines and the University of Missouri. He was on football squads at both Auburn and Alabama, was assistant coach at the University of Missouri, and later was a football coach in the Big Ten, Big Eight, and Rocky Mountain Conferences. Eugene went back into the Army in WW II, attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, was discharged because of WWI injuries, and then joined the Navy as a rocket specialist. Following the war, he spent all his time developing liquid-propellant rockets and gas turbines and patented a number of his works. Some of his techniques have been used in the country's space programs. Following his retirement, he moved back to Blount County, where he died.
