Miriam Ann Morris was born Dec 3 1895, in the St Columb Major Workhouse to Mary Gertrude Morris and John Spicer, an engine driver on the Great Western Railway and who was no part of their lives, and not named on her birth certificate. She was baptized in the Church of England.
On August 02 1906, Miriam would board a ship and be sent to Canada through the child immigration scheme via Dr. Barnardo Homes. On March 5, 1907, her brother, William, too would reach Canada's shore and settle nearby.
Miriam was placed in many different homes before finally settling in Chatham, Ontario. She married John Ernest Brown on August 30, 1917. Their first son, Barnard, born 1918, would not survive birth and lays in an unknown/unmarked grave in same cemetery. They would go on to have 3 more children who thrived.
