Mary Katheryn (Jeffrey) Rowley of Madison, passed away in her home, surrounded by her loving husband and daughters on May 16, 2008, after a long, painful battle with breast and bone cancer at the age of 70.
Mary was born in Wharton on November 25, 1937 and was a member of the Wharton Missionary Baptist Church. She was the loving wife of 51 years to her devoted husband and best friend, Charles "Charlie" Rowley. Mary was lovingly known by many of her friends and family as "Peepie".

Mary is survived by her husband; four daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and Gary Bennett of South Charleston, Cynthia and Paul Walker of Peachtree City, Ga., Vickie and Robert M. Totten of Racine, and Kathryn and Elliot Billian of Falling Waters; and six grandchildren. Her grandchildren are Jessica Walker Grizzard, Ashley Nicole Walker, Heather Marie Walker, Mary Kathryn Hope Totten, Hannah Ellyse Billian, and Aaron David Ray Billian.

Her father, Fred S. Jeffrey; mother, Nevada Marie Jeffrey-Dillard; and three sisters, Bernice Wells, Clarice Lee, and Gloria Purdue, preceded Mary in death. Surviving siblings include Marlene Gair of Ona, Fred S. Jeffrey Jr. of Barboursville, Sharon Cartmill of Hurricane, Carl Jeffrey of Clarkston, Mich., Brenda Jeffrey of Greenwood, La., and David Jeffrey of Louisiana.

Mary, a homemaker, was a member of the Madison Chapter No. 121 Eastern Star since 1972. She did volunteer work at Boone Memorial Hospital as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and served as secretary of the Boone County Council. Mary was a lifetime member of the PTA, where she dedicated 17 active years in supporting the teachers and the enrichment of students of all age levels in the Madison schools. She has devoted her life to her family, faith in God, and her friends. No one could have asked for a more fun, loving, and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, or friend. Her magnetic and outgoing personality touched everyone she met.

The Rowley family would like to give a special thank you to the Rev. Terry Holley of the Madison Baptist Church for all of his prayers, visits to her home and support to the family through this difficult time. We would also like to thank all of our friends and family that visited, called, sent cards, flowers and food to Mary and her family throughout her illness. Mary was overwhelmed at the outpouring of love and support from so many friends and family. It really meant the world to her. Also, a special thank-you to the many religious congregations around the country, and here at home, that added Mary to their prayer lists. Your acts of kindness to Mary and her family are greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten.

Visitation and the funeral service will be held at Madison Baptist Church on Monday, May 19, 2008, with the Rev. Terry Holley officiating. Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. and the funeral service will begin at 2 p.m.

Flowers may be sent to the Madison Baptist Church at 426 Second St., Madison, WV 25130.

A graveside service will be held at Memory Gardens.

Handley Funeral Home, Danville, is in charge of arrangements.
