Hattie Sophie Zmuda Chudek was the oldest of four daughters of Joannis ZMUDA and Zofiae TEPER, born near Jordanowa, Sucha County, Galacia, Kingdom of Austria (now Poland). She and her sister Catherine immigrated to America in 1906 through Ellis Island. Her other two sisters, Maria and Stephania remained in Poland where they married and raised families. Catherine settled in Detroit, married, and raised her family in Michigan.

Hattie and her husband John Czudek were married 8-Jul-1912 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in NE Minneapolis, MN. They raised three sons, John Jr, Joseph, and Adam. All served in the military during WWII, Adam being the son who went to Ireland, North Africa and Italy. All brothers served their country during the war and returned home safely.

John and Hattie bought a house and an adjacent lot a few miles north of Minneapolis, now a suburb named Columbia Heights. They grew carrots, tomatoes, cabbages, onions, radishes, beets, and other vegetables on their land. A variety of apple trees also supplied fruit for their table.

Both Hattie and John had self-sustaining skills learned while growing up in rural agriculture areas of Poland and Austria. Every fall their kitchen was turned into a small canning factory where Ball jars and lids were sterilized in huge tubs of boiling water. The harvest was "put up" and stored in the cellar for consumption through the Minnesota winters.

Hattie would bake bread in her kitchen in a small gas stove. I recall the sweet smell of the bread dough as she kneed it thoroughly before putting it into greased pans. The loaves were round, with a high top and a brown-sugar flavored crust. It was our family treat to see "the card" in the window which signaled us to walk over and get a loaf of freshly baked bread.

Hattie enjoyed fishing. Her home was about 5 miles east of the Mississippi River. In the summer she walked to the river in the morning with a cane fishing pole and would return with fish for the evening meal.

The CHUDEK homestead was a small three-room house on a 40 by 120-foot lot in Columbia Heights, MN, USA. They owned the adjacent lot to the north where they cultivated their garden, a tradition of many immigrant families.

Hattie surrounded her garden with a border of Iris and surrounded her house with huge hydrangea and many other flowers. The front lawn was kept in perfect condition with daily watering.

The CHUDEK family never owned a gas-powered lawnmower. A hand-powered reel lawn mower and sickles were used to help keep the lawn under control.

The CHUDEK home never saw a modern vacuum cleaner. Instead, a newspaper would be whetted and tore into small pieces to be scattered on the living room rug. A regular corn-stalk broom would sweep up the dirt while the pieces of moistened newspaper would keep the dust to a minimum.

The CHUDEK family did not own an automobile. All travel was done on foot, by the streetcar system, or an infrequent trip by train to visit Hattie's sister in Detroit, MI. My father would take his mother to the Mississippi River on fishing trips sometimes in the summer. I recall stopping on the way home to buy ice cream cones, "Tutti Fruitti" was her favorite flavor.

The CHUDEK family never had a telephone. All communication was done in person or by written letters.

Hattie's life was a simple life compared to today. But it was not unlike the other immigrants who came to America to pursue a better life in this young country. She was a first-generation immigrant, she learned its language, she became an American citizen, and she supported this country through two world wars. Thank you, grandma Hattie!
