Charles R. Nicol was born in Hammond on September 14, 1920 and was the one son of Stanley and Eva Robinson Nicol. He attended Hammond High School and worked at the Dairymen's League Plant before enlisting in the US Army. He served as a Private First Class with the First Army Infantry and was sent overseas in October 1943, being stationed at England, France, and German. He was killed in action at Luxembourg on December 7, 1944 during the battle of the Bulge when the German troops overran the Allied lines.

His remains were returned to the US for burial in October 1947.
