Lucile Wright Spiggle, 94, of Athens, died Saturday night, Oct. 18, 2003, at NHC of Athens.

Born in Kansas in 1909, she was a daughter of the late James Lloyd and Iva Mitchell Wright, and was preceded in death by her husband, Frank M. Spiggle. She had a very difficult childhood and, by the time she was 13, had lived in 13 different places. The family eventually settled in Athens when she was a teenager. Lucile attended high school in Friendsville and then returned to Athens, where she spent the remainder of her life. Most of her early years were without a father and she supported her mother, two siblings and herself by working up to three jobs, all while attending Tennessee Wesleyan College. She eventually graduated from the University of Tennessee with a master's of science degree. She taught in the Athens public school system for 38 years. She also taught Sunday school for many years at the First Baptist Church of Athens, where she was an active member with her late husband, Frank, to whom she was married for 60 years. Lucile put two sons through college including one through medical school. She was never a quitter and persevered to the very end. She will be sadly missed.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Dr. John A. and Gwen Spiggle of Morganton, N.C., and Tom Spiggle of Nashville; one granddaughter, Dawn Spiggle of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two grandsons, Tom Spiggle of Washington, D.C., and David Bristol of Morganton, N.C.; and one aunt, Pauline Mitchell of Athens.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with Dr. Mike Womack officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

The body will be in state at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Monday where the family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Jim Dodson, David Winder, Doug Harrod, Joe Riley, Bo Perkinson, Roy Thomas and John Ray McKeehan.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church of Athens, 302 Washington Ave., Athens, TN 37303; to E.G. Fisher Library, P.O. Box 1812, Athens, TN 37371-1812; or to the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum, 512 Madison Ave., Athens, TN 37303.
