George Virgil Hester Sr., 68, of the Rogers Creek community near Athens, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center.

A native Tellico and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he had lived in the Rogers Creek community and was a son of the late Leonard Hester and Ida Mae Jack Hester Chrisman. He was of the Baptist faith and was a well-known roofer and owner of the 3-M roofing company for more than 30 years. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Leonard Hester; two brothers, Clarence Hester and Roger Chrisman; and one grandson, Caleb Jerome Butler on Aug. 20, 2000.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Webb Hester of Athens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis D. and Ed Brooks of Athens, and Teresa and Mike Williams of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, George V. Jr. and Teresa Hester of Athens; six grandchildren, Nick, Zack and Allen Hester, Amanda Colloms, Jeremiah and Lebron Million; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Ollie Mae and Homer Frisbee of Niota, Dale Ann and Terry White of Athens, Juanita Holder of Englewood, and Juanita McDaniel of Athens; seven brothers and six sisters-in-law, Billy and Faye Hester of Athens, James and Judy Hester of Athens, Larry and Lois Hester of Decatur, Freddy and Parkie Hester of Etowah, Willard Chrisman of Athens, Jimmy and Barbara Chrisman of Athens, and Kenneth and Joyce Chrisman of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Freedom Baptist Church, 2207 Velma Road, Athens, with the Rev. Roy Hogan and Danny Evans officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery with grandsons and sons-in-law serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Homer Frisbee, J.B. Wilson, John Alexander, Eddie Hester, Gary White, Steve Hester, Albert Robinson and Gary Hester.

The body will be in state from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday prior to the services at the church.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ziegler Funeral Home of Athens is in charge of arrangements.
