Please note this is NOT the same William Ruffin as the one of Memorial #99893300 who was from Jasper County, Mississippi and who married (only) Sarah Ann Baggett and whose parents are unknown. They are two different people. Pls do not merge them or confuse their wives or children.

William Hopper Ruffin of this memorial is the son of William H. Ruffin and Margaret Ritchie. He married (only) Frances Ann Gildart, (daughter of Captain Francis Gildart and Sophia Starke Gildart). The only child of William Hopper Ruffin and Frances Ann Gildart Ruffin was Colonel Francis Gildart "Frank" Ruffin.

It can appear odd that William Hopper Ruffin died in Philadelphia, since he and his family lived in Mississippi, but in fact his place of death is verified in the obituary of his mother which reads: " . . . In the fall of 1825, Mrs. R. lost in the short space of four days, her husband and a son; during the last fall [1826] she lost another son, a resident of the State of Mississippi, who breathed his last at Philadelphia."

His death certificate from Philadelphia shows his birth year as 1786 and death date as shown above. It shows his burial at 'Union Methodist Burial Ground', presently known as Old Union Methodist Episcopal Church Burial Ground.
