Johann Georg "George Coots" a.k.a. Kutz was born in 1728 in Maxatawny Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. George purchased 130 acres (53 ha) of land from Peter Wentz, on June 16, 1755, who owned much of what is now Maxatawny Township. Kutz first laid out his plans for the town in 1779. The first lots in the new town of "Cootstown" (later renamed Kutztown) were purchased in 1785 by Adam Dietrich and Henry Schweier. Kutztown was incorporated as a borough on April 7, 1815, and is the second oldest borough in Berks County after Reading, which became a borough in 1783 and became a city in 1847. 


George Kutz took the "Oath of Allegiance & Fidelity" in Berks county, on August 16, 1777. He, however, did not enlist as a soldier during the American Revolutionary War. The Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution honor him for his Patriotic Service, as Ancestor # A067597. According to their records, he was born 1730, in Berks county, died in 1788, in Maxatawny Township, Berks county, and his wife was Margaretha Bieber. Application for membership in the Society has been filed by the descendants of his daughter, Magdalena, who married Martin Krohn.


On February 8, 1750, in Zion Moselem Church, Richmond Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania George married Johanna Hottenstein, daughter of Jacob Hottenstein and Maria Dorothea Reber. Johanna, was born on February 19, 1727 in Oley Township, Berks Co., PA and baptized on 19 Nov 1729, by Reverend John Caspar Stoever. Johanna died in 1752 in Maxatawny Township,probably in child birth with her first child.


In 1754 George married, secondly, Eva Margaretha Bieber. Margaretha was born in 1730, and died in 1796 in Kutztown, PA. She was buried in St. John's Union & Hope Cemetery, Kutztown, PA.


George's Last Will and Testament was admitted to probate on 22 APR 1788. Buried: St. John's Reformed Church Cemetery, Kutztown, Berks Co., Pennsylvania. DAR Patriot #261274.
