Death of an Old Settler.

Susan E. Wolff was born in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, October 19, 1839. She was married to John J. Kauffman at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, December 22, 1857, and came to Keithsburg May 23, 1858, which place has been her home until her death October 8, 1905. She was the mother of seven children, all of whom are living except two, Edwin and Claude, who preceded her to the better land. All the living children were present at her bedside during the last illness cecept Mitt and Emma, but they arrived in time for the funeral. Mrs. Kauffman had been a consistent member of the Methodist church from childhood. That she was an affectionate mother and kind friend was best attested by the large crowd of friends and neighbors who came to call on her during her illness, in offers of help and sympathy, and in attendance at the funeral. Many beautiful flowers were sent. Her life was spent in the services of others. She was never too busy to excuse herself from helping another in distress. The stranger passing by could judge her good life by the beautiful flowers which grew in her garden and on the lawn in summer and in her rooms in winter. Mrs. Kauffman was a lover of flowers and no one knew better how to cultivate or care for them than she. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ferris. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to Greenmount cemetery where her tired body was laid to await the glad morning when the dead in Christ shall rise first. Those from abroad who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. T. Davidson and Mrs. W. P. King of Muscatine, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Milton Kauffman, Burlington, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. El L. Wolff, George Sponsler and Mrs. Maria Sponsler of Aledo; Mrs. Clara Becker of Muscatine; Mrs. McGrath, Mrs. R. D. Keith, Monmouth; Mr. Forbes, Oquawka; Willis Humphreys, Alexis, Fred Humbert, Denver, Colo.
