At age five, Gailord, with his parents moved to Sumner. He attended the public schools of Sumner 1895 until 1910. He also attended the Leander-Clark College of Toledo, Iowa, for two years. Following college, he coached high school athletics for two years. Gailord served in the infantry of the U.S. Army in France during World War I.
He was employed with the Waterloo courier as a salesperson for thirty years, retiring in 1959. Leota's death occured October 7, 1978.
Gailord was a longtime and active member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and was a current member of the Faith Evangelical Church of Sumner. He was a charter member of the Thomas E Woods Post, American Legion, of Sumner. Gailord compiled an extensive history of his military service during World War I. He was also a past member of Modern Woodman of America and served as a chairman of the Bremer County Democratic politic party for many years. Gailord became a resident of the Western Home in Cedar falls two years ago and his death occured there this past Tuesday, December 21, 1982. He was 92 years old.
He is survived by three sons, Rue of Fairbank, Iowa, Gayl of Maquoketa, Iowa, and Ward of Sumner; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Alta Chukker of Worthington, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leota; his parents; one brother, Ray; and two sisters, Viva and Lila.
