New post: Harriet is my third great grandmother on my father's side. Her daughter Elizabeth married Samuel and she lived with them in 1880 in Washington County, Iowa. Thank you.
One of the early western pioneers and one who has had a large share in making Western HIstory was Samuel Barbour Shellady. He was born May 8, 1836 in New York State.
In his early life, he went to Iowa to live where he married Elizabeth Hankins, April 1, 1860 at Iowa City. Mr. and Mrs. Shellady had nine children. Four died in infancy. Those who lived are Zara (Wallace), Emma (Flood), Martha (Spry), and Ella (Johnson) and Amos.
In 1886, they moved to Jefferson City, Jefferson County, Montana. Here he raised cattle and farmed a small acreage. His wife and daughters kept a boarding house for several years. Mr. Shellady also carried mail.
In 1907 they came to Park City, to live with their children because of illness. Mr. Shellady died May 20, 1908 at Park City.
Mrs. Shellady was one of Park City's most outstanding figures, a devoutly religious woman and an inspiring friend.
For years, her birthdays had been festive occasions in this community. Hundreds visited on those days. She lacked only 8 years of reaching the century mark. She died at the age of 92 on May 13, 1931, at the home of her daughter, Zara Wallace, in Park City.
